What is this?

Do tell, because I think it may tie with my favorite of all spring blooms. We saw this flower on a family walk a couple weeks ago and I still haven't found it in any field guides.

Scabiosa--looks like the "pink mist" variety, but depending on the size and color, it may be another. This link will tell you more: www.paghat.com/scabiouspinkmist.html

The "blue butterfly" is a very easy one to grow (here in VA-zone 7!), and was one of the first perennials I bought for my garden. It blooms from April to October and is so sweet. They did start to fizzle after a few years and by year 6-7, I didn't have any left. Larger varieties, which are quite striking, did not do well in my garden.

I have also heard it called Bachelor Button. It is one of my favorites too because the blue one is such a true blue, a color hard to find in nature.

Oh, thank you ladies!! I can't believe I've never seen scabiosa before - it seems I've heard her name a hundred times! So pretty, now I just have to find some for my garden. :)

LOL, I was all I KNOW! I KNOW! like Arnold Horschak.

Isn't scabiosa an ugly name? We call it pincushion flower. I have a nice big clump in my backyard and another little one I almost killed through neglect but it's coming back now.

Scabiosa, My mother gave me some from her garden last summer. We live in a zone 3/4 and they grow well here.
