Your Recommendations: First Holy Communion

I've been thinking a lot recently about Gianna's First Holy Communion. Though it's a year-and-a-half away I'd like to find some good resources we can work with now. What do you recommend? Are there specific books/resources/activities that strike you as being especially thorough, beautiful or inspiring for a young girl?

Ask Margaret, she has something you can download, it's beautiful!

The life of Blessed Imelda Lambertini, patron saint of First Communicants, by Mary Fabian Windeatt (sp?).

I'm asking myself the same question. Please post an update on whatever you find works for your girls.

I have had one receive First Communion, but I would like to know some new ideas, too. I have one that will go through about the same time as yours. We also read Blessed Imelda Lambertini and First Communion Days. I've heard that Faith and Life is also a good program, but we didn't use that before. Right now we are using the St. Joseph's First Communion Catechism's.

The King Of The Golden City is a beautiful analogy/story for little ones and is most especially suited for little girls. Little Flos must make her "cottage" ready to receive the King, who has promised to visit her. A very lovely supplement to any catechism and available through Catholic Heritage Curricula. Our catechism of choice is the St. Joseph First Communion Catechism. Very simple and straight forward. A small tome, just perfect for little hands and little hearts!

I obviously haven't been through this yet, but I remember Margaret in Minnesota doing a special novena with her daughter before her first communion, and I am going to remember that for when the time comes for Madeleine - you know, 6 years down the road :)

Glory Stories: Let the Children Come to Me is the story of Blessed Imelda Lambertini (and I also agree that the book by Windeatt is good).

I also think The Weight of a Mass is a must-have story book.

For prep, the St. Joseph Catechism. The Faith and Life books are solid as well.

I've used all of the resources that have been listed here and they are all very good. We've had five so far make their First Holy Communion and for the most part I've done the same things: Blessed Imelda, St. Joseph's First Communion Catechism, "King of the Golden City".
God Bless!

Sorry to pop back in again, but after giving it more thought, I have discovered that the best prep for First Holy Communion is frequent attendance at daily Mass. I don't know where you're at with that, but I have found over the years that the more frequently we attend Mass, the less I have to teach out of a book and the more anxious they are to actually receive. Hope this helps.
God Bless

My daughter will make her First Communion at the same time that Gianna will. As a convert, I have no special memories of this time as a little girl and am looking forward to checking out the suggestions you're given. :)

This may be late in commenting but, as my son nears his First Communion I thought I would share what I've used w/ him and the CCD class at our parish. Mind you I don't think you need everything mentioned but, each item is just so lovely I couldn't resist to have them.
- The life of Blessed Imelda Lambertini (Holy Heros has a beautiful CD and coloring book of her story),
- St. Joseph's First Communion Catechism,
- Faith and Life series (by far has been a favorite,
- The King of the Golden City (a must have & inexpensive),
- The Weight of the Mass,
- First Communion curricula from Catholic Heritage Curricula is fantastic,
- Taking my son to Mass through out the week brought us closer and helped him learn the Mass

God bless,
Elizabeth
