As some of you have asked, I did finish the mirror for the girls' room. It proved a very satisfying first woodworking project. If you have an inclination yourself to make such a thing, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have - I highly encourage taking on such projects. Working with our hands to create something beautiful for the good of our homes and our family life is extremely satisfying, and the result edifies not only through beauty, but by turning our minds to Him who gave us the grace and the hands to accomplish our work.

Fairly new to reading your blog, it is wonderful! And the mirror - wow, I thought it was something you found and refurbished, but that you made it from scratch! Astounding. It looks so lovely, and girly! ;-)

If you have time to help me, I see you took up sewing last year and I was AMAZED at your progress/speed! I would love to find out how you learned so quickly. I have a simple Kenmore sewing machine, and really don't know anything... never even took Home Ec! :) But my goal is to start making at leats 50% of my girls' clothes. Any suggestions... books, easy patterns, anything? :)

Amy, the onlays are from decoratorssupply.com, a Chicago-based company specializing in ornaments for woodwork-furniture. I highly recommend their Catalog 124 which contains something like 18,000 composition onlays and mouldings. They're all beautiful, and even better, they're affordable! :)
Lerin, yes, DO take up sewing! I'd recommend starting with a basic sewing class. I took a 4 week beginner class at my local JoAnne's. (Try to go to a store that sells Husqvarna-Viking machines. Their classes are better.) A class is a good way to start because while you're making something fun, you can ask the instructor a bazillion questions to help you through the process and give you extra tips. And tell her, say on your 3rd lesson, that you want to try some of the more intimidating techniques, say, installing an invisible zipper or sewing button holes. Take advantage of her expertise! Other than that I encourage sewing items you're really excited about - don't just go for a pattern because it's easy or you'll lose interest.
